cooking-mentorsYoung people aged 16-25 are invited to come along and take part in a variety of interactive health activities at Gateway, near Five Ways in Edgbaston.

Staff from all of our services – Health Trainers, Pregnancy Outreach Workers (POWS), Lighten Up and Employment Access Skills and Training (EAST) – will be on hand to chat to young people about what they do, and to offer some fun demonstrations and advice about making healthy choices.

The idea of the Health Taster Day – as with all of our Making Health Work activities – is to help young people gain the experience and confidence needed to live more healthily.

  • Our Cooking Mentors will be running food workshops, showing how easy it is for anyone to create healthy, quick, affordable snacks
  • Our POWS will be on hand with some information and advice about sexual health (including free condoms!). Young people can talk in confidence to our pregnancy outreach workers – not necessarily about contraception and STDs, but also the emotional, psychological aspects of sex and relationships
  • Our Health Trainers will be offering health advice checkups – participants will be able to find out what their BMI and blood pressure is, what it means, and how to improve it. There will also be some examples of light exercises that anyone can do to get started on a path to fitness, so wear something you can move about in!
  • And if childcare is an issue, bring them along – there will be activities available for very young children, too

The Health Taster Day is FREE to attend – you just need to register your interest by emailing Sajida.Mawji@gatewayfs.org or calling 0121 456 7820 and asking for Sajida.

Making Health Work

We’re running the Health Taster Day in partnership with Foyer Federation, as part of our Making Health Work project. Making Health Work is inspired by Foyer’s Healthy Conversations – it’s all about helping young people to have “healthy conversations” about the relationship between health and work.

Making Health Work offers four different activities for young people between the ages of 16 to 25:

  • One-to-One Coaching – supporting young people in setting and progressing health goals that further their opportunities in employment and develop their health and wellbeing.
  • Conversation Groups – providing young people with a peer-support platform to share their experiences and explore health in a diverse, imaginative, and engaging way that ‘brings health to life’.
  • Health Taster Days – giving young people the opportunity to experience a variety of interactivity health activities that give them the experience and confidence to make positive health choices.
  • Health Action Projects – young people designing, developing and delivering their own projects that address health issues that are important to them and promote positive health messages to the wider community.

If you can’t get along to our Health Taster Day, but you’re interested in any of the other activities we’re planning, do get in touch.
