From Small Steps to Big Change

In July 2024, Lorraine* and her mother, Lily*, found themselves at a turning point. Life had quietly nudged them toward change when they were contacted by the Solihull Lifestyle Service Triage. The invitation was simple: a 12-week Weight Management Course designed to support individuals in leading healthier lives. This opportunity promised not just a chance to lose weight, but a pathway to greater wellness—a prospect both women decided to embrace.

The sessions were held at The Onward Club in Chelmsley Wood, a familiar place within their community. Glenn Rodgers, their advisor, facilitated these meetings with a mix of professional insight and personal care, ensuring the environment was supportive and encouraging. The sessions provided both face-to-face interaction and a series of educational handouts that guided the participants toward healthier lifestyle choices.

As the weeks passed, both Lorraine and Lily began to notice tangible changes. Lily, who had been struggling with high blood pressure, experienced a significant improvement. The regular monitoring of her blood pressure by Glenn not only brought peace of mind but also meant fewer trips to the doctor’s office, which was a welcome relief for Lily. She
was adopting healthier eating habits, and the combination of these dietary changes with her medication contributed to the lowering of her blood pressure.

Both women saw noticeable improvements in their health. Lily’s blood pressure lowered significantly, and Lorraine found herself using the course materials to benefit not only her own health but also her work. As a Lead Worker for Birmingham Mind’s Mental Health Service, Lorraine shared the knowledge she gained with her team, helping them better support clients dealing with the side effects of mental health medications.

The experience had a lasting impact. Both Lorraine and Lily lost weight, improved their diets, and deepened their understanding of healthy living. Lorraine valued the practical handouts and was so pleased with the program that she inquired about her brother, who has type 2 diabetes, joining the next course.

Their journey wasn’t without its challenges, but the results were undeniable. With improved health and a strengthened bond, they would wholeheartedly recommend the Solihull Lifestyle Service to others. The lessons learned through the program would continue to guide them toward a healthier, more fulfilling life.
