We work to improve the chances for mums and babies. The sooner pregnant women get the help and support they need the better it is for them and their unborn child, but there can be practical and emotional problems that prevent women getting the help they need from the services that are available. Jackie James talks about what she does and how Pregnancy Outreach Workers bridge the gap between the women who need support and the agencies that can provide it.
Practical help can be making sure that women sign up for antenatal checks as soon as possible, and helping them get to their appointments. POWs also make sure they sign up for things like the Healthy Start scheme which provides vouchers for fruit and vegetables and free vitamins.
