Gateway’s 2014 Fun Run: a storming success!

RunnersWe’re in the third year of our Fun Run now and – despite some rather rainy weather – it was another great success!

We had 28 people take part this year, which is a smaller turn-out than in previous years, but we expected this when we saw the weather forecasts for Saturday. Those who did come were full of beans and certainly didn’t let the rain dampen their enthusiasm, as you can see from the photos!

We did things in a slightly more organised way this year – we gave everyone a run number and placed stewards along the route to guide people and cheer them on.

As ever, the Gateway Fun Run took place at Cannon Hill Park. We started with a warm-up, led by Health Trainers, then runners and walkers took off for a lap of the park.

warming-upWe use the same route as the Cannon Hill Parkrun, which is exactly 5km, and we don’t mind how fast or slow you go – it’s all about getting active and doing what you can. This year we had some runners who were trying to beat their personal best (well done to those who did!) but, as in previous years, we also had some who walked, and some parents with children.

We’ve very pleased to say that everyone managed to complete the 5km – a great achievement.

Well done to everyone who took part. We know how hard it can be to get up and get moving, especially when the weather is dreary, but we’re really proud of everyone who made it – and made it fun!

Meet the runners… three years on

Most people who came on Saturday are current or previous clients of Gateway’s Health Trainers or Lighten Up services, so you may recognise some familiar faces in our video. They include Mark – now 6.5 stone less than when we first met in 2012 – and Charly – no longer using a stick to get around, and finding the course much easier than last time she took part, in 2012.

Thanks to the Mac for letting us use their foyer to register people; to Jenni Northcote from Birmingham South Central CCG, who encouraged participants with some goodie bags; and of course to our brilliant Health Trainers for caring for our muscles, standing in the rain to steward us and being generally cheery and encouraging!

Getting setAround 50 people took part in our annual Fun Run in Cannon Hill Park on Saturday. And – whether they ran, walked or did a bit of both – everyone managed the full 5k. What an achievement!

We provide a lot of health related services, so it’s good to bring clients together occasionally. Getting out and doing exercise is a nice thing to do together so it’s a lovely social event. But helping to get people more active also fits in with city and national agendas like Change 4 Life.

Our Fun Runners this year were mostly clients, former clients and staff, although a few people who’d seen the publicity turned up on the day.

Our Health Trainers were out in force and had encouraged lots of their current and former clients to come along, which was brilliant.

Caroline Willey, who runs a local Rosemary Conley group, also brought a big group of people along (thanks, Caroline!). Our Lighten Up team refer a lot of people to Caroline so it was great for everyone to be able to put faces to names.

Joy gets us movingThe morning started with a warm-up from Health Trainer Joy Wilkes, who got us all stretching and moving. Then we were off!

Our Fun Run route took in two laps of the park. this is the same route as the regular Cannon Hill Parkrun, so it’s a good taster for those who think they might want to continue and, perhaps, start doing something like this regularly.

well deserved restFor those who hadn’t done anything like this before, however, there was no pressure – people could walk as slowly as they needed to around the course. We even had a few mums with buggies! It’s all about just getting out and getting moving.

The weather on Saturday was muggy and overcast, but the threatened rain didn’t appear – in fact the sun came out as we finished! All the runners received a goody bag for taking part… and a well-deserved sit down.

We’d like to say a big “thank you” to our Health Trainers for helping organise the Fun Run. Thanks, also, to our Gateway Volunteers who helped out on the day.

What a difference a year makes…

Many of this year’s runners were participating for the second year running (if you’ll excuse the pun) – including Mark, who joined us on both Fun Runs with his mum.

We spoke to Mark on camera each time so, in the following video, we’ve put together a clip from last year, followed by a clip from Saturday. You can see the difference that having a Health Trainer (and, of course, putting in a lot of hard work) has made!

Gateway Fun Run 2013

We’re pleased to announce that we have a date for the 2013 Gateway Fun Run!

Gateway Fun Run 2012This year’s run will be on Saturday 20th July in Cannon Hill Park.

It’s a 5km course (that’s just over three miles) and everybody’s welcome, whatever your ability. You don’t even have to be able to run the course – you can walk it if you like.

Following the success of last year’s run, when around 70 people took part, we decided to make it an annual event. There were runners, walkers and even mums with buggies! Most people were linked to Gateway in some way – lots were current or past clients of our Health Trainer or Lighten Up services – but some were people who had just seen the adverts and turned up on the day.

The Gateway Fun Run is part of our ongoing work to provide a variety of easy and accessible ways to get active. This is just one option but this gives people the opportunity to do something as a group knowing they’ll draw support from each other.

Last year, Joan was the oldest participant at 80. Following a serious illness, she’d been working with one of our Health Trainers – and increasing her walking was something they’d been doing together. So they suggested she come along and take part, which she did as part of her recuperation. Joan said: “the best thing about today has been walking in company and, of course, the sense of achievement at the end”.

Charlene also took part. She came along with her slimming group, many of whom had signed up through the Lighten Up weight management scheme. She too had health issues, so decided to walk – but was delighted with herself for completing and said: “Coming here today has given me the boost to get out there and do more walking”.

If you’re looking for a way to get more active and you want some motivation, a fun run is a great thing to aim for.

As NHS Choices explains:

Running is free, you can do it anywhere, and it burns more calories than any other mainstream exercise. Regular running and walking can reduce your risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke. It can also boost your mood and keep your weight under control.

We’ll then be able to tell you about the group training we have planned as a warm-up to the July run. We’ll be offering a weekly walking group and a running group to cover different abilities, to help you get into training. We’ll also put your name down for a goody bag!

Ideally, we hope that people who take part in the fun run will get a taste for it and perhaps think about joining the weekly Cannon Hill Parkrun. Around 200 people complete the Parkrun every week – why not you?
