Unlocking Independence: How One Conversation Helped A Woman Reclaim Her Freedom

19th December 2025

In the UK, approximately 7.1 million adults—about 16% of the population—have very poor literacy skills, which can significantly hinder their ability to access essential services, including transportation. Navigating public transport systems often requires reading schedules, understanding signage, and completing online applications, posing substantial challenges for individuals with limited literacy or digital skills. This digital exclusion can lead to increased social isolation and reduced independence. Recognizing these barriers, initiatives like the Inclusive Transport Strategy aim to make travel more accessible by providing assistance and simplifying processes for those facing such challenges.

For Nazia Akhtar (name changed), getting to the hospital had become a quiet source of stress. Living with congenital heart disease and still recovering from viral encephalopathy, she relied heavily on others—especially her sister—for basic tasks like attending appointments. But her biggest barrier wasn’t only her health. It was something far more invisible: literacy.

When Nazia’s GP referred her to social prescriber Tubasem Malik, the request seemed simple—help her apply for a Blue Badge. But the situation quickly revealed more complexity. Nazia couldn’t read or write, and had no access to digital tools. She was also unaware of the wider range of support she was entitled to.

Tubesem approached the situation with calm and care. He explained the Blue Badge process step-by-step, completed the application remotely with Nazia’s informed consent, and ensured she fully understood what to expect, using her sister as a trusted communicator. But he didn’t stop there.

After learning that Nazia was eligible for a disabled bus pass—something she hadn’t known existed—Tubesem helped her apply, submitting everything securely and giving her a reference number for future use. Both applications, once processed, would give her new levels of freedom: the ability to attend medical appointments independently, especially when her sister is unavailable.

For Nazia, these two simple forms meant more than transport—they meant dignity.

What made this case different wasn’t just the outcomes, but the approach. Tubesem’s support reduced the stigma Nazia often felt when trying to access help. She expressed deep appreciation for being treated with patience and respect, and her sister echoed those feelings, saying it was rare to find someone who took the time to truly check understanding.

By the end of their work together, Nazia had more than just applications filed. She had confidence. She now understands her rights better, feels less intimidated by digital systems, and knows that help can be tailored to her circumstances—not the other way around.

This was never just about a Blue Badge. It was about opening doors—literally and metaphorically—to a life with more independence, more self-worth, and more possibility.

Nazia’s journey underscores the importance of personalized support in overcoming barriers related to literacy and digital exclusion. By providing tailored assistance and fostering understanding, individuals facing such challenges can regain independence and confidence, leading to improved access to essential services and a better quality of life.
