A New Chapter for South Birmingham’s Health – And You Could Help Write It

30th June 2025

Something’s been shifting in South Birmingham.

Walk through the streets of Northfield or Edgbaston and you’ll find vibrant, resilient communities—families helping neighbours, carers supporting loved ones, young people with big dreams. But behind the strength and smiles, we also see the struggle. Rising mental health issues. Preventable heart conditions. Older people falling at home, too often alone. Rates of smoking and COPD that are among the highest in the city.

For many, the odds just aren’t fair. But what if we could change that?

That’s exactly what the Fairer Futures Fund aims to do. And we need passionate, local organisations—just like yours—to help us make it happen.

🧭 A Vision Born from the Community

Three anchor organisations—Age UK Birmingham, Gateway Family Services, and Northfield Community Partnership—have joined forces to lead the Fairer Futures Fund in the South Locality.

This isn’t just another top-down initiative. It’s shaped by data, yes—but also by real conversations over community lunches, by stories of lived experience, and by the tireless input of local professionals, carers, and citizens.

We’re focusing on the health issues that matter most here, in our streets and neighbourhoods:

  • ❤️ Cardiovascular Health: Because too many are rushed to hospital when it’s already too late.
  • 🧠 Mental Health: Especially for men, young people, and carers who feel invisible until crisis strikes.
  • 👵 Healthy Ageing: Because growing old shouldn’t mean growing isolated or at risk.
  • 🚭 Smoking & Respiratory Health: Because quitting isn’t easy—especially when poverty, stress, and stigma get in the way.

👐 We’re Looking for Partners—Are You One of Them?

We’re inviting local organisations, community groups, and service providers to step forward with bold, practical, and community-led ideas. Whether you’re working with older adults, supporting young people, promoting healthy eating or tackling loneliness—we want to hear from you.

The Expression of Interest (EOI) process is now open. You don’t need a perfect bid—just a real commitment to the communities we serve, and a clear plan to make a difference.

We’ll help with partnership building, provide clear guidance, and offer support along the way.

🗓️ Here’s What You Need to Know

  • EOI Opens: Now
  • Deadline for EOI Submissions: Midnight, Sunday ,20th July
  • Delivery of Successful Projects Begins: September 2025
